CAF Approves Creation of African Nations League

African football is about to write a new chapter in its history. Meeting on February 13, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved the creation of an African Nations League. The announcement was made by its president, Patrice Motsepe, at the end of the session.

The new competition will be held every two years. It will fit in between the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will continue to be staged every four years, and the FIFA World Cup. The stated objective is to strengthen the continental calendar and provide national teams with more competitive matches.

For CAF, the move is also about aligning African football with modern demands by increasing high-profile fixtures and enhancing the visibility of teams across the continent.

The remaining details of this Nations League (including its format, qualification criteria, and full schedule) are yet to be defined. One thing is certain: African supporters can expect to see their national teams on the pitch more often, competing in meaningful, high-stakes encounters.
