Pope Leo To Visit Cameroon During Easter

The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, is set to make a major apostolic visit to Cameroon in from April 15 to 18, 2026. The announcement was made this Wednesday, February 25, 2026 by the Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Jose Avelino Bentercourt.

Being his first apostolic visit to Africa since his Pontificate in February 2025, the Holy Father’s visit will begin on April 13-15, in Algeria, Cameroon from 15 – 18, Angola from 18-21, and Equatorial Guinea from 21 – 23.

As we earlier reported, preparatory meetings have been taking place between Vatican diplomats and Cameroonian authorities, notably at the Presidential Civil Cabinet.

Itinerary and Focus

The first Papal Mass in Cameroon will be celebrated in Bamenda, representing the Anglophone regions, Douala, the economic capital; and Yaounde the political capital.

Given the current post-electoral tensions and calls for national reconciliation, the visit is expected to focus on key issues such as national reconciliation, social justice, the release of political prisoners, and dialogue with authorities.

Background

This visit will be Pope Leo XIV’s first outing in the Central African subregion since assuming office in February 2025. Cameroon, with approximately 40% of its population identifying as Catholic, has hosted two previous Papal visits – by St. John Paul II (twice) and Benedict XVI (his first African visit). Pope Leo XIV’s visit will be a significant moment for the country, providing an opportunity for spiritual reflection and addressing pressing national issues.

The visit is also expected to strengthen ties between the Vatican and Cameroon while addressing the country’s internal challenges within a diplomatic and spiritual framework. As the country navigates post-electoral tensions, the Pope’s visit comes at a critical moment, offering a chance for reflection, dialogue, and reconciliation.
