Other category winners included veteran women: Sarah Lienga first, Geraldine Eya second, and Efeti Njie Belta third. For veteran men, Wotani Efoe took first place, with Vishiti Paul and Tanga Louis following in second and third, respectively. In the junior female category, Esake Rejoice won, while Awa Victory and Nadia Kinyui claimed second and third. Among junior males, Aboubakah Sidiki finished first, Membo Orlando second, and Zoa Kang third.
This year’s test race also introduced a notable innovation: cash prizes and trophies for the top finishers. Mofor Jeremiah and Fai Joyce each received a total of 100,000 CFA francs, including the trophy, while the second and third place finishers also received cash awards. The South West Athletics Federation highlighted this as a first in over a decade, aimed at motivating athletes and recognising their efforts.
A total of 204 athletes participated in the pre-selective race. Eteki Njoh Andrew, President of the South West Athletics Federation, praised the turnout and reaffirmed plans to ensure the mountain trails are fully cleared for the main race on February 21. “We won’t let anything stand in the way of our athletes’ success,” he said, addressing concerns about the track.
Both Mofor Jeremiah and Fai Joyce expressed gratitude for their victories and readiness for the main event. Jeremiah emphasized faith and perseverance, while Joyce reflected on the lessons learned and her commitment to training harder for February’s race. With top athletes now identified and conditions being improved, anticipation is building for the full Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, promising an exciting showdown on February 21.
