The Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary (CBTS) in Ndu, Donga Mantung Division of the North West Region, has been thrown into mourning following the death of a student pastor under circumstances suspected to be suicide.
The deceased, Pastor Abufon Hygenus, in his mid- 30s, was a Bachelor of Arts student in Theology at the seminary and was scheduled to graduate in June 2026. He reportedly returned to the CBTS campus on Saturday, January 3, after the Christmas holidays.
According to information gathered, on Sunday, 4 January, 2026 morning, Pastor Abufon asked his wife and children to proceed to church ahead of him. After the church service, family members returned home to discover his lifeless body hanging from the rafters in the kitchen of their residence. Pastor Abufon Hygenus was originally from Babanki. He is survived by his wife and four children, the youngest of whom is just two months old.
As of press time, the exact circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear. Authorities have opened investigations, and an autopsy is expected to be conducted to establish the cause of death.
The tragic loss has deeply affected the CBTS community and members of the Baptist family, who continue to express shock and sorrow over the untimely death of the young seminarian.
