Ahead of National Day: Esunge John Uses Marathon To Strengthen Social Cohesion In Tiko

Sentiments of national unity, integration, and living together have been fanned in Tiko Subdivision during the first edition of the Tiko Subdivision Marathon. The initiative by Esunge John Motove a popular Tiko-based engineer and notable to the Mutengene second class chiefdom was in line with National Unity Day to be celebrated nationwide on May 20.

The marathon was held under the theme; “For peace and unity” with patronage from the Subdivisional officer for Tiko, Nokuri Samuel. The sporting event on May 16 brought together many local athletes and revitalised the municipality with a crowd of onlookers. The athletes taking off at the Tiko Council esplanade took a track around Tiko town for over 8km to arrive at the finishing point.

The victory ceremony was coloured with the presence of local dignitaries including the First Assistant Divisional Officer for Tiko representing DO Nokuri, Senator Lionel Papinatou Fonderson, and Mayor Peter Ikome Mesoso III.

Fast-rising athlete, Mofor Jeremiah championed the male category while Sarah Liengu Emmanuelle; grand daughter of the Queen of Mount Fako, Sarah Liengu Etonge, led the female category. They both went home with cash prizes of CFA100,000. Other winners were also awarded in cash.
