A message of resilience, discipline and personal transformation took centre stage as Dr. Azinwi Terence Niba launched his book ‘From Zero to Hero’, a work inspired by his own journey through hardship to self-realisation. “Hero is not an end game; it is a process,” the author told guests during the launch, setting the tone for an event deeply rooted in reflection, struggle and hope.
The book captures challenges that mirror the lived realities of many young people, particularly those navigating life without guidance or support. Dr. Niba recounted a difficult childhood marked by the loss of both parents, his father at the age of ten and his mother four years later, an experience that left him without stability at a critical stage in life.
Growing up amid uncertainty, he faced distractions and pressures that often derail young people, including exposure to harmful habits and risky choices. He noted that today’s adolescents are even more vulnerable, with increasing exposure to crime and substance abuse.

However, the turning point in his life came through personal resolve. Determined to change his trajectory, he took on side jobs to fund his education, choosing action over despair. According to him, this period marked his transition “from confusion to clarity,” a decision that would ultimately shape his future.
From Zero to Hero, he explained, is intended as a practical guide, especially for young people dealing with loss, poverty and limitation. Drawing from his experiences, the author emphasises that overcoming adversity is possible through resilience, discipline and sustained motivation.
A central theme of the book is the distinction between motivation and discipline. While motivation may be temporary, he stressed that discipline is cultivated over time through consistent choices and actions. “Once you are consistent in your choices, your actions and your intentions, that is real discipline,” he said.
Beyond his work as an author, Dr. Niba is a psychologist, mental health specialist and humanitarian with over 16 years of experience. He urged young people to adopt healthy coping mechanisms in the face of adversity, noting that challenges can strengthen individuals and build resilience.
He also underscored the importance of mentorship and personal initiative, encouraging young people to seek guidance while developing strategies suited to their individual circumstances. Reflecting on his own journey, he highlighted the importance of self-reliance, recalling how he worked his way through school.

A cross section of guests at the event
The launch event brought together mental health professionals, educators, media practitioners, as well as family and friends, all united in celebrating a story of transformation shaped by adversity. Speakers echoed a common message: while one’s environment may influence them, it does not have to define their future.
Ultimately, From Zero to Hero stands as a testament to the power of persistence and the continuous decision to grow, even when faced with overwhelming odds. The book is available on Amazon and can also be obtained directly from the author in Cameroon.
