On May 2, 2026, the people of Meforbe in Santa Subdivision, North West Region, turned out in large numbers to witness the installation of their new traditional ruler, Fon S.Z. Gaforbe V, in a ceremony marked by cultural pride, unity, and renewed hope for peace and development.

The historic event, which took place at the Meforbe Palace Plaza, drew administrative authorities, traditional leaders, religious leaders, elite, and over 2,000 villagers, all united in celebration of what many described as a long-awaited milestone.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Divisional Officer (D.O) for Santa, Jules Roger Nkolo Voundi, described the newly installed Fon as a courageous and experienced leader who has remained committed to his people despite the challenges posed by the ongoing socio-political crisis in the region.

“The Fon we are installing today stood firm at the height of the crisis. He remained resilient and worked quietly to ensure peace in his community. He is a reliable collaborator of the administration,” the D.O stated, adding that the recognition of the new Fon was both timely and well-deserved.

The D.O further emphasized the strategic importance of Meforbe, noting its position as a gateway to Santa Subdivision and the wider region. He urged the new ruler to demonstrate vigilance and dedication in handling the complex social and economic dynamics of the area.

Elite and community members expressed strong confidence in the leadership of Fon Gaforbe V, while also outlining their expectations. An elite of Meforbe, Tenor Elvis, underscored the need for inclusive leadership. “My expectation is that he should lead us with wisdom, humility, and great ambition,” he said.

Ndiforchu Juliana, another attendee, described the ceremony as “a dream come true,” praising the peaceful and well-organised nature of the event. She expressed optimism that the new Fon would unite the people and sustain the peace already being fostered in the village.

Similarly, Fru Jonathan highlighted the massive turnout as a demonstration of the population’s support. He called on residents to rally behind the new leader and embrace his vision, particularly in promoting peace, collaboration with government authorities, and community development. “This Fon has been an advocate for peace in Santa. The population must support and encourage him so that development can thrive,” he said.

Grassroots Expectations: Roads, Peace, and Livelihoods

Beyond ceremonial praise, residents voiced practical concerns and expectations. Silas, a commercial motorbike rider, appealed for urgent road rehabilitation, noting that most roads in the area become impassable during the rainy season. He also cited electricity shortages as a pressing issue.

Adamu Ibrahim, representing grazers, raised concerns about dwindling grazing land due to expanding farming activities. He called on the new Fon to mediate between farmers and grazers to ensure peaceful coexistence.

Other community members urged the Fon to tackle youth delinquency, particularly drug abuse, and to create employment opportunities for young people.

The President of the Meforbe Development and Cultural Association described the installation as a sacred moment linking the past, present, and future of the village. “Under the watchful eyes of God and our ancestors, we are witnessing a moment of profound significance. The Fon is a living symbol of our unity and cultural heritage,” he said.

He also paid tribute to past leaders, and acknowledged the efforts of previous generations who fought for the recognition and stability the village now enjoys.

For decades, Meforbe had been perceived as an opposition stronghold, a label that reportedly hindered development.

However, community leaders say sustained efforts by past and present leadership have gradually transformed this perception.

At 47, Fon S.Z. Gaforbe V is described as a seasoned and dynamic figure. He is a prominent farmer, municipal councillor, and an active member of several development associations, including the North West Funds Union. His leadership experience and grassroots involvement are seen as key assets in navigating the challenges ahead.

Observers note that his installation comes at a critical time, as communities in the North West Region continue to grapple with the effects of conflict and economic disruption.

As drums echoed across Mokvome and traditional rites sealed the enthronement, the people of Meforbe expressed cautious optimism. For many, the installation of Fon Gaforbe V is not just a cultural event, but a turning point, one that could usher in lasting peace, stronger collaboration with authorities, and meaningful development.

With expectations running high, all eyes are now on the new Fon to translate hope into tangible progress for his people.
